To me horses are the personification of grace and beauty. There is a fluidity about their movements that in many ways resemble a dance. They are the freest of spirits. While they can be tamed, and many of them become our friends and working companions, somehow I suspect that deep down inside every horse is a wild mustang or filly, a part of the spirit that is theirs alone and will never belong to any man. As long as the spirit is not broken either by neglect or abuse, we are allowed to witness it every now and then - and what a privilege that is!
To see them run, their manes dancing in the wind, is to experience the full joy of life and living. May the same be said of each and every one of us!

White Kitty

When I was very young, I had a beautiful white cat, although I am not certain which one was the pet. Every morning she would wait for me to come to the kitchen and sit in the old rocking chair, then she would jump up and sit on my lap and wrap her "arms" around my neck. That was a long time ago, but I remember it as if it were yesterday, think of her often and miss her.

Over the hills and through the valleys I run. In rain and sunshine, daylight and moonlight, alone and with immense herds of others of my kind. I run because it reminds me that deep within my spirit I am free, no matter what my circumstances may seem. I run because I love to run, because running releases my passion for living. I run because I was created to run. What were you created to do? Are you living your passion?

I heard recently that you can spend a lifetime looking for purpose and never find it, but if you find your passion, you will bump into your purpose. One of the reason I love animals so much is their simplicity, their transparency. They unselfconsciously do what they were made to do, and never think about image or others perception. And give glory to God in their living. There is so much we can learn from them if we only open our minds and hearts.

Winter in Iowa can be dreary. That is on the good days. On bad days it is stormy, miserable, and disastrous. We ask each other "Why do we live here?" The answer is usually "family ties." I have yet to figure out if that is a reason or just an excuse. My friend Sandra says "a rut is just a grave with both ends open." Ah, but if the ends are open, that means we can get out, doesn't it? Well, if we are going to go on living here, we must take joy where we can find it. So we fill feeders all over the property, so that we can help out God's beautiful little creatures, but most of all, so that we can delight in watching them. Seeing life in the midst of this desolate tundra does lift the spirit a little
Chickadees are tiny and personable, with cute little movements and lots of energy. Although I haven't taught them how to eat out of my hand, (and have no plans to at this point) they seem very friendly, don't fly away immediately when someone shows up.

Stump, a wonderful ten-year-old dog, became the hero of seniors throughout America by walking away with Best in Show at Westminster Dog Show this week. What a trooper! This is not a painting of Stump, but in his honor of another dog of the same breed. I love their soft, beautiful coats, their droopy eyes, and their regal bearing. Of course, ALL DOGS are winners in my book, but I am glad to see this little guy receive a special honor this year.

This is a pastel painting on Wallis Sanded Paper, mounted on foam core board, and matted with a double white mat. Matted size is 14 x 18, to fit a standard size frame. Frame is not included.

Cardinal in Winter by Della Burgus

Winters in Iowa are long and cold, most days are gray and dreary. That is why God created Cardinals, and why they are able to withstand the ridiculously low temperatures and not migrate to Florida or other places south. Then He painted them (the guys, anyway) with the brightest red feathers He had. So we poor humans who somehow found ourselves in the deep freeze could endure one more day. Only God could have thought of that. And only God knows why I am still here when there are places with summer year around. Or other places with only a mild winter. But if I lived in one of those places, this would be just a pretty little bird, and not the touch of God...

Every now and then one of my friends will say, "Hey, Della, what's with all the white horses?"
Well, as with most things in my life, the answer is a bit complicated. On the one hand, I simply love horses, and especially love painting white horses. Love to paint them in different light, with different backgrounds and studying the reflection of different colors on their creamy white coats. At a deeper level, there is a spiritual connection there. They are to me a symbol of everything that is strong and pure and faithful, and whenever I am going through rough spots, or periods of growth, am disappointed in people or just plain overwhelmed, one of the ways I gain strength is by painting white horses.
Now, don't take this to mean that I love them more than brown or black horses, or dogs or cats, or any wild creature. Because all creatures, great and small, seem to bring me closer to God. I love them all. Each has its own gift and its own link to the Creator. But when I feel especially disconnected, I paint a white horse and see things more clearly.

Although I had seen these gorgeous creatures in photographs and on television, I had never actually met one until we visited a dog show about a month ago. I spent some time studying them and talking with their people. They are regal and graceful and I was completely in awe. I was reminded of the quotation by Keats, "A thing of beauty is a joy forever."

The Dog Show

I went to a dog show recently. It was the best gift that I could give myself. Dogs have a wonderful effect on people. Well, most people. There were six of these spaniels sitting on grooming tables, some being groomed, others waiting to show. It was an amazing sight. Most of them were black and white, almost identical. They looked regal and serene and beautiful. This one was a different color, a little excited and extremely friendly. Reached out his paw for a "shake" to people as they walked by. Of course, I wanted one of these for my own, but of course, with two dogs already in the house that isn't going to happen. I didn't get to see them show, even though I hung around most of the day. I met a lot of nice, happy dogs, from very large to very small, and I thought about how nice it was for God to make all of them to make our life more livable.

The least we can do is try to return the favor. If you share your life with dogs, give them as good a life as you possible can, love them, enjoy them while you can, because they won't be around on this earth forever. Make every day as precious for them as they do for you.

New White Horse

I have always loved white horses, which you know already if you have been reading my blog for any time at all. They express to me all that is wonderful in life: joy, exuberance, freedom, and the peace that comes with being who you are, and all you were meant to be. I love their excitement before a storm, the joyful excitement that is in harmony with nature. I love the way they love to run, not to race, not to impress anyone, most of the time not because they are in a hurry, but just because they love it. Do they love feeling the wind blowing their mane, or the sound of their hooves as the strike the ground, or the feeling that they could fly if they would go faster, faster? I don't know. But it seems that way to me. And whenever I see a horse running for the joy of running, I think of how it must please the Creator when He sees everything in His creation doing what they were meant to do. Were you meant to run, or sing, or write, or paint? Were you meant to play with children, or pass the time with the elderly? Were you meant to build bridges or drive trucks or play basketball? Whatever it is, do it with passion, with all the passion you have. You will fulfill your purpose and bring a smile to the Heavenly Father.

When they show up unannounced...

What do you do when your husband takes the dog for a walk and comes home with something like this? It was all curled up in the middle of the sidewalk, shivering in the cold and trying to sun itself. It's little eyes were matted shut and it was very frightened. Well, the last thing we needed was another mouth to feed, but you can't turn away something that needs your help, so this is our new baby. This picture was taken about a week and a half ago, he has grown since then. I intended to photograph him a little more regularly, but he moves so fast now, most of the pictures are blurry. He has graduated from formula to kitten food and is becoming strong and healthy. He loves playing and finds Q-tips much more fun than toys. Our poodle has become a good buddy, but the border collie is still a little afraid of him. You would be afraid, too, if you saw a little yellow ball of fluff scooting across the floor at you. Our cat does not know about him yet.

This is a pastel of a little tabby kitten that showed up at the house of my husband's parents. My father-in-law warned my mother-in-law not to feed it or she would never get rid of it...
They named him Tiger. My father-in-law was sure he was an exceptionally intelligent cat, and my mother-in-law talked to him as if he were a child. He is about 8 years old now and still loves baskets and boxes. He watches the world go by through a big picture window.

Both of these little guys were fortunate to find loving homes, but many strays do not. Please, please make sure all your pets are spayed or neutered. And visit my friends at Art Helping Animals, a group of online artists who love animals and donate a portion of their sales to animal charities.
